Tom Hanks heartbreak: Cast Away star’s ‘loneliness of marriage’ laid bare in confession | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

The One Show: Jermaine ‘caught off guard’ by Tom Hanks joke

Hanks’ turn as workaholic Chuck Noland in 2000’s Cast Away airs today from 2:20pm on Channel 5. It follows the story of Noland, who ends up stranded on a desert island at Christmas, after going on one last job of the year for his firm. Upon the island, Noland is forced to try and deal with the isolation it brings, as well as survive the harrowing conditions thrown up by the Pacific isle.

The survival flick was nominated for two Oscars, including for Hanks’ performance in the Best Actor category, though he would eventually lose out to Russell Crowe in Gladiator.

Hanks remains one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and has earned a further three Academy Award nominations throughout his distinguished career.

However, despite being among the world’s most recognisable stars, little is known about Hanks’ personal life, until he opened up about it on Desert Island Discs in 2016.

Speaking to the show’s host Kirsty Young, Hanks discussed in detail his childhood, and relationships, particularly his first marriage which would end in divorce.

Hanks married Samantha Lewes in 1978, aged just 21.

Their union produced children Colin and Elizabeth, which Hanks admitted was to “quell the loneliness” both actors felt.

He said: “Having a kid at 21 was the greatest thing that ever happened to me because I didn’t smoke pot.

“I didn’t do drugs, I was not a party boy.”

Some six years later, Hanks met Rita Wilson, a fellow actor, who would end up changing his life forever.

By 1987, Hanks was divorced but a year later married to Wilson, who he noted “got” him.

The now 65-year-old said: “I don’t think I’ll ever be lonely any more, that’s how I felt when I met my wife.”

Among the tributes he paid to his second wife on the show, was the inclusion of Talking Heads’ track One in a Lifetime, which reminded him of his first date with Wilson.

Another of his choices left Hanks clearly emotional, this time Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra – used in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Hanks noted how this offered him recollections as a child, and the nomadic childhood he’d experienced.

The star recalled how father Amos worked as a chef, and ultimately the family had to go where the money was, which meant 10 different houses in five years.

He continued: “This was the ‘wow’ moment of my life going from a kid trying to figure out what’s interesting in this life to young man yearning to be an artist.

“I started asking myself: ‘How do I find the vocabulary for what’s rattling around in my head?’

“Not long after I started going to the American Conservatory theatre by myself to see plays I had no idea even existed.”

Young probed the California-born star further on what the thoughts were in his head, with Hanks having to compose himself to respond.

In an apologetic tone, he laughed: “What have you done to me?

“No, it’s all right, because I put too much thought into this list. What it was, it was the vocabulary of loneliness.”

Cast Away airs today from 2:20pm on Channel 5.

GoFundMe ‘shuts down’ fundraiser to help Amber Heard pay Johnny Depp $10.4m damages | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

GoFundMe has reportedly removed a $1 million fundraiser entitled “Justice for Amber Heard” which claimed to be raising money to help Ms Heard pay Johnny Depp $10.4 million in damages following their high-profile libel trial.

It is understood that the campaign was set up shortly after the jury’s verdict was announced on Wednesday.

A user named Kimberly organised the fundraiser and claimed that she had been in touch with Amber Heard’s legal team.

Kimberly also promised that Amber Heard would receive all of the money raised, as reported by TMZ.

The description read: “The trial was a disgrace…

“The judgement exceeds her net worth…If you can please help her.

“She will have direct access to the money. I also contacted her attorney so they can loop her in.”

GoFundMe swiftly flagged the fundraiser and determined that neither Amber nor her legal team were behind it.

A spokesperson for the site informed the aforementioned publication that the page was taken down before a “substantial amount” of money was raised.

The verdict ruled that Mr Depp won all three of his claims and Ms Heard was guilty of defamation in her 2018 op-ed.
The statements include the headline: “I spoke up against sexual violence – and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.”
And two other sentences: “Then two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.”

And: “I had the rare vantage point of seeing, in real time, how institutions protect men accused of abuse.”
Ms Heard only won one of the three claims in her countersuit.

The jury found that Mr Depp defamed her through his lawyer Adam Waldman and will have to pay her $2 million.

‘Aware of being alone’ Richard E Grant on ‘navigating grief’ months after wife’s death | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Richard said: “Navigating grief is the most peculiar thing because you’re acutely aware of how alone you are.

“Yet at the same time, there’s the contradiction that when you’re in company you sometimes feel more alone than on your own,” he added while smiling.

“You just have to do it, just have to do it,” he signed off the video.

Richard’s confession comes two months after he told how he was sorting through his late wife’s clothes seven month after her death.

Sarah Jessica Parker dismayed over conflict with co-star rumours | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

The American actress, 57, starred as Carrie Bradshaw in the original six seasons of the show and in two films in 2008 and 2010, alongside Kim as Samantha Jones. Kim, 65, has said she was “never friends” with her cast mates, she rejected a role in a planned third film and was snubbed in recent show reboot And Just Like That… In response, Sarah told Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast: “It’s so painful for people to keep talking about this ‘catfight’.

“I’ve never uttered fighting words in my life about anybody that I’ve worked with, ever. There is not a fight going on. There has been no public dispute or spat or conversations or allegations made by me or anybody on my behalf. That is not the way I would have it.

“So I wish that they would stop calling this a catfight or an argument, because it doesn’t reflect, actually, there has been one person talking.

“And I’m not going to tell her not to, or anybody. So that’s been kind of painful for me also.”

Kim recently told Variety magazine she had turned down a script for a possible third movie in 2017, describing the proposed plot as “heartbreaking”

Her character received unwanted pictures from her friend’s 14-year-old son. Sarah said Kim had asked for things the filmmakers were “not able to do”, canning the movie.

The remaining trio – Sarah, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis – reprised their roles in the And Just Like That…sequel on HBO Max which first aired in December.

Sarah said she worked hard to “be decent to everybody on the set”, including “the people that I feel I’m responsible for as a producer”.

She added: “There just isn’t anybody else who has talked about me in this way, so it’s very painful because she’s a huge contributor to the success.”

Sarah said Kim’s portrayal of Samantha was “wonderful” but noted they knew she did not want the part so was not approached.

The jurors awarded the Hollywood actor $15m which was later reduced by the judge to $10.35m.

Following the verdict, Depp was pictured out in Newcastle with Sam Fender and Jeff Beck in a picture which was recirculated on social media.

Depp also took to Instagram to thank his fans for their support following the verdict, writing: “The best is yet to come and a new chapter has finally begun.

“Veritas numquem perit. Truth never perishes,” he ended the post, as hundreds of his fans and celebrity friends rushed to the comments to leave messages of support.

The couple made their first appearance the following day to watch Trooping the Colour from a Buckingham Palace window.
